Customer Reviews
Western Digital is continuing to do what they always do. Excellent products at reasonable prices. I bought this to put into a new PC I bought when I was forced to move to Windows 11. It was a super easy install and setup. It was completely compatible. I had no issues with heat resistance or storage limitations.
Coming from SN850x, those m.2 were already so fast but this one is almost double the speed, loading window only takes 3s (after initial mobo check). Heat management is not an issue at all unlike Samsung 9100 Pro that runs much hotter and very easy to install and I had no problem with the benchmark tests.

These SSD’s seem to work in portable SSD enclosures. They are cheaper than my favorite Samsung 990 and really work nearly as well. Still fast (the Samsungs are a bit faster but unless you are transferring huge video files, it may not be a benefit) and the important thing is, these Lexars seem manage.
Edited 4/27/2024- Increased overall rating to 5 stars. After 6+ months, this ssd is still working perfect and hasn’t really lost any speed or health (see 2nd pic) even though it has had over 3TB of data on it for the last 4 months. Great drive and glad I purchased 2 before the prices increased. I still recommend it!

Complete Buying Guide for Wd_Black_Sn8100_Nvme_Ssd_-_8Tb
Essential Factors We Consider
When evaluating NVMe SSDs for your specific needs, we look at several critical factors including interface generation (Gen4 vs Gen5), sequential read/write speeds, capacity requirements, thermal management solutions, and compatibility with your existing hardware. For gaming systems, we prioritize low latency and high throughput, while content creators focus on sustained write performance and capacity.
Budget Planning
NVMe SSD pricing varies dramatically based on technology generation and capacity. Gen5 drives command premium prices but offer future-proofing, while Gen4 options provide excellent value for current-generation systems. Consider allocating 20-30% of your total PC budget to storage, balancing capacity needs against performance requirements. Remember that higher capacity often means better price-per-GB ratios.
Final Thoughts
The world of NVMe SSDs has evolved rapidly, with Gen5 technology pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. While the WD Black SN8100 8TB represents the pinnacle of current technology, careful consideration of your actual needs versus premium features will help you make the best investment for your specific use case and budget constraints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the difference between PCIe Gen4 and Gen5 NVMe SSDs?
A: PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs like the WD Black SN8100 offer significantly higher bandwidth potential, reaching up to 14,900MB/s compared to Gen4’s typical 7,000MB/s. However, Gen5 requires compatible motherboards and may not show dramatic real-world improvements for most users until software and applications fully leverage the extra bandwidth.
Q: Do I need a heatsink for my NVMe SSD?
A: Heatsinks are beneficial for sustained workloads and high-performance systems, helping prevent thermal throttling. Many premium SSDs come with integrated heatsinks, while budget options may require you to purchase them separately or rely on motherboard-mounted solutions.
Q: How much storage capacity should I get for gaming?
A: For gaming, consider your current game library size plus room for growth. Modern AAA titles can take 80-150GB each, so 1TB handles about 10-15 games, while 2TB-4TB provides ample space for extensive libraries. If you stream or edit content, lean toward higher capacities.
Q: Are Gen5 SSDs worth the extra cost?
A: Gen5 SSDs represent future-proofing rather than immediate necessity. Unless you’re doing professional content creation or have Gen5-compatible hardware, Gen4 SSDs deliver excellent performance at a much lower price point while still providing years of reliable service.
Q: Can I use these SSDs with my PlayStation 5?
A: Only specific SSDs are officially licensed for PS5 use, primarily those designed for console compatibility with appropriate form factor and speed specifications. Always verify PS5 compatibility before purchasing expansion storage for your console.
Choosing the right NVMe SSD ultimately depends on your specific needs, budget, and system capabilities. Whether you’re a gamer seeking lightning-fast load times, a content creator handling large media files, or a professional working with demanding applications, there’s an SSD on this list that will meet your performance and capacity requirements. Take time to evaluate your priorities—whether it’s raw speed, massive capacity, or the best value proposition—and select the drive that aligns with your computing goals. The investment in quality storage pays dividends through improved system responsiveness, faster file transfers, and enhanced overall user experience that lasts for years to come.
